Carnival Tuesday

Carnival Tuesday is the centrepiece of the entire season — the day the masquerade bands take over the streets in full costume and "cross the stage" before the judges. Hundreds of thousands of people play mas or line the routes; for sheer scale and colour, nothing else on the Trinbagonian calendar comes close.

When is Carnival Tuesday?

Carnival Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, so the date shifts with the Christian calendar each year — sometimes early February, sometimes into March. The table above lists the confirmed dates for the years we track. Like Carnival Monday, it isn't a statutory public holiday under the Public Holidays and Festivals Act, but the country closes for it all the same: banks, schools, offices, courts.

Crossing the stage

The masquerade bands — some with thousands of registered players — parade through judging points, the most famous being the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, competing for the Band of the Year title. Costumes represent months of work by mas camps whose designers are treated as artists of national importance. Each section in a band carries its own theme executed in feathers, beads, wire and rhinestones, and the King and Queen of Carnival — individual showpieces that can stand ten feet tall and weigh hundreds of pounds — are crowned in the days before.

The Road March

Music drives the whole day. The Road March is the song played most often at the judging points as bands cross, and winning it is one of the most coveted prizes in Caribbean music — Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin and Destra Garcia have all built legacies on it. From sunrise until the final lap, the same handful of songs power the road, and by nightfall everyone in the country can sing the winner from memory.

Las lap and Ash Wednesday

As the light fades, las lap begins — the final circuit through the streets before midnight, equal parts celebration and farewell. Carnival ends at twelve; Ash Wednesday morning brings a country-wide quiet, packed beaches, and Catholics in church with ashes on their foreheads. That bittersweet hard stop is part of what makes Tuesday so emotionally charged: the entire nation finishes the party together.

Visiting for Carnival

If you're coming for Carnival, plan early. Flights and Port of Spain accommodation sell out months in advance, costume packages in popular bands go on sale (and sell out) the previous year, and fête tickets move fast after Christmas.
