Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is the high point of the Christian year — the celebration of the resurrection — and in Trinidad and Tobago it anchors a four-day weekend that the whole country, churchgoing or not, organises its life around. The day itself is the quiet centre of the storm: church in the morning, a big family lunch after, and energy saved for Easter Monday.

Is Easter Sunday a public holiday?

Easter Sunday always falls on a Sunday, so it isn't listed as a separate statutory holiday under the Public Holidays and Festivals Act — it doesn't need to be. With Good Friday and Easter Monday on either side both being statutory holidays, the country effectively gets Friday through Monday off. Sunrise services and the return of the Alleluia

The most beloved Easter Sunday ritual is the sunrise service. Anglican, Methodist and evangelical congregations gather before dawn in churchyards, on hilltops and in open lots to mark the resurrection with the first light of the morning. Catholic parishes follow with high masses at which the Alleluia — silenced through the forty days of Lent — is sung again for the first time. Even for casual attenders, it's one of the most moving services of the year.

The Easter table

After church, Easter Sunday becomes a family day built around lunch. The spread is classic Trinbagonian Sunday cooking at full strength: callaloo, macaroni pie, stewed or curried meats, pelau, ground provisions. Chocolate eggs and decorated hard-boiled eggs circulate among children — a British inheritance long since localised; supermarkets stock Easter eggs from February. Lent's small abstinences end today, which gives the meal an extra edge of celebration.

The shape of the long weekend

Each day of the Easter stretch has its own character. Good Friday is solemn-but-social — kites, fish, beaches. Saturday is errands and preparation. Sunday is church and family. Monday is the outdoor blowout. Many families use the four days for a Tobago trip or a stay in the countryside, and the school calendar builds its Easter break around the weekend, making it one of the easiest family-travel windows of the year.

Planning notes

Sunday trading laws and holiday closures mean most businesses are shut; restocking happens Saturday. If you're travelling over Easter, book the Tobago ferry and flights well ahead — the inter-island route is at its busiest — and expect beaches and guesthouses to be full from Friday through Monday.
